ˇ@ 2011/12/22 Support The Salvation Armyˇ¦s Philippine Typhoon Relief Mid-morning on 16 December 2011 tropical storm Washi hit Mindanao, the southern region of the Philippines with wind and heavy rain. Villagers - most of them unprepared - were caught in their homes sleeping while 180 mm of rain triggered flash floods and mudslides. The storm killed more than 650 people with almost 800 missing. Nearly 100,000 people were left homeless. This is one of the worst catastrophes to hit the Philippines in history. The heavy rain left wide areas without power. Emergency teams struggled to find survivors in cloying mud and recover the bodies around the cities of Iligan and Cagaya de Oro. Health officials worried an outbreak of diseases. Drinking water, food, and medicine are urgently needed. The Salvation Army will send relief bags, including dried food, medicine and bedding supplies, to 3,000 and 2,000 affected families in Iligan and Cagaya de Oro before Christmas. The Army plans to distribute emergency supplies to more 30,000 to 50,000 families later. Please donate now to support The Salvation Army ˇ§Philippine Typhoon Reliefˇ¨.
