Support The Salvation Army’s East Africa Famine Relief

More than 10 million people are now facing starvation in East Africa following one of the worst droughts for 60 years in the Horn of Africa. The Salvation Army is providing drinking water to the affected children and families in northern Kenya and has engaged in distributing emergency food supplies to the starving people in Isiolo, eastern Kenya, which is an area out of the current relief food programme.

The Salvation Army has been working in Kenya since 1921. The long service history enables the Army to learn the local culture and use its local knowledge and personnel to provide immediate relief.

As the drought crisis in East Africa causes worldwide concern, The Salvation Army carried out assessments and found that the nomadic people of the Turkana region of northern Kenya face widespread starvation. Three rainfall seasons have failed, livestock has died, milk production has dropped and food stocks are depleted.

Water is scarce, with people in the region having to travel on average more than three kilometres to access water. Schools are closing because they lack funds to pay food and water bills.

The Salvation Army are collecting water from boreholes and large water tanks on its properties and providing clean and safe water for around 5,000 villagers and 2,000 schoolchildren in Turkana. The scheme has further benefits of decreasing the distance travelled to fetch water and reducing the risk of women being abused as they seek water in isolated locations.

The Salvation Army also identified the need of Isiolo in eastern Kenya. There are a large number of starving people who have been left out of the current relief food programme. A three months emergency food supplies project is scheduled to provide maize, beans and cooking oil to 5,000 people in Isiolo. Local Salvationists are ready to give the beneficiaries encouragement through the provision of food.
