The Worsening Youth Problems The drug abuse, casual sex and non-attendance problems have been getting worse among the youth population over the past few years. Regarding to the drug abuse problem, the drug addicts at age 21 or below had a drastic increase of 37% in the past three years. On the other hand, more than 10,000 young school leavers who are aged between 15 and 19 cannot find job. The unemployment rate of this age group is up to 21.1%. All the statistics reflect that the youth problems are critical and in need of attention. ˇ@ Continuous Support Helps Youngsters to Rebuild Their Life Kin (an alias) is now 17 years old. His parents separated with each other in his early years. He was not interested in studying since Primary Six and soon became a non-attendance (discontinue studying and unemployed) youngster. Losing his goal of life, feeling bored and being instigated by peers, Kin took his first bite of Ketamine and started his drug-abuse life. In an occasion, social workers of The Salvation Army reached Kin and encouraged him to participate in the ˇ§Life Bankˇ¨ project and made friends with the ˇ§Echo Teamˇ¨. The ˇ§Echo Teamˇ¨ is formed by specially trained volunteers, who are parents or ex-drug abusers. They share their stories with Kin and brought positive influences to him. With the Teamˇ¦s continuous support, Kin learnt to rebuild his life and stopped taking drugs. ˇ@ Warm Their Hearts with the ˇ§ Red Kettleˇ¨ In order to provide more suitable services to our young people and the needy in our society, The Salvation Army needs your ardent support. Please help us to bring warmth and hopes to their lives by making donation to ˇ§The Christmas Red Kettle Appeal 2009ˇ¨. ˇ@
Back to Top ˇ@ History of Christmas Red Kettle It was a tradition that can be traced back to one Christmas over a hundred years ago. Captain Joseph McFee was raising funds for food at a market. He used a large cooking pot tied onto a tripod and put a sign over it: "Keep the kettle boiling". So, the first Salvation Army collecting kettle came into being. Behind it all, though, is the same message of The Salvation Army, 'Sharing is Caring.' ˇ@
