The Salvation Army Responds to Philippines Flooding

Please Help Us to Help

Typhoon Ketsana hit the Philippines less than one day but it has brought extremely heavy rain to the central part of Luzon Island and has caused the most severe floods in the capital, Manila, for the past 42 years. The rainfall in 12 hours was 424mm, exceeding the bureauˇ¦s one-day record in June 1967. Nearly 80 per cent of the city was under water. At least 106 people were killed or reported missing and 330,000 made homeless.

Colonel Malcolm Induruwage, Territorial Leader for The Salvation Army The Philippines Territory, said that everyone in the affected areas is in a panic. The Salvation Army today (September 28) distributed emergency relief supplies, including cooked food, dried food, clothing and medical items, to the survivors in 15 evacuation centers. The local government desperately needs the NGOs to help provide food, blankets and medicine to the survivors. It is important to secure the basic needs of the victims and to prevent the outbreak of epidemic disease in the affected areas.

Lieut-Colonel Samuel Pho, Officer Commanding for The Salvation Army Hong Kong and Macau Command, would like to call for the support of the people of Hong Kong. The donations of Hong Kong people definitely help The Salvation Army to provide immediate relief support to the victims of the Philippines floods and help them ride out this devastation.
